What Does Branding Mean for a Start-Up?

You hear marketers talk about how to brand your business. They say that you need a branding strategy. You need to brainstorm a tag line and employ a top level graphic designer to design a killer logo. To me, this doesn’t make much sense for a start-up. I view branding slightly differently.

Branding comes second after a remarkable product. I think that Seth Godin should trademark the word remarkable.

Once people experience your product they must firstly be able to easily remember it and secondly, be able to easily tell others about it. Now, this is where branding kicks in. Branding has evolved into a process that makes it easier for customers to tell others about your product. In other words, branding is now a tool of word of mouth.

You should use branding as the icing on the cake. However, you need to make a cake that’s worth talking about first.
