What You Can Learn From Lady Ga Ga

We all know that Lady Ga Ga is an exceptionally talented musician and songwriter/composer. However, before she became Lady Ga Ga she was the equally talented Stefani Germanotta. As Stefani she recorded some quality tunes. However, she never went viral.

In a way, Stefani was the anti-Ga Ga. From my perspective Stefani was a creation of record execs in suits who decided to play it safe. Although the musical talent was clear, there was just nothing to talk about. Her image was stock. She was bland and boring. She fell into the trap that so many start-up entrepreneurs fall into. She was good but not remarkable.

However, she evolved. She allowed her own style to shine through by complementing her talent with a remarkable image. She also focused on writing music that would appeal to club goers. She developed her own sound and a unique quality that sets her apart. Suddenly, you have a “marketing perfect storm.” Excellent talent mixed with something remarkable targeted at a niche of influential early adopters. No doubt Ga Ga put in the ground work and built her fan base bit by bit.

So what can you learn from this? You must stand out in some way. Quality is not remarkable anymore. You need to be comment worthy and target a niche of early adopters. Start at the fringes then cross over to the mainstream. Also, be patient and build your fan base one at a time. They will tell their friends.
