Will the Future of The Internet Based Business Model be about managing customer value perception?

Forget all the possible tools that will be developed to help you build a business online. Instead, take a look at the underlying fundamentals of marketing online.

Lets go back to the late 90s when Napster came to prominence. The most significant thing that happened was that the customer’s perception of value moved away from recorded music. Instead of valuing an artist’s recorded works, the music fan placed a high value on the live performance side of the music business.

In the past, tours were loss leaders for albums. Now, albums are loss leaders for tours. I believe that the future of business on the web is tracking where customers perceive value, and trying to predict when and where this value perception will move to, as a result of disruptive technologies.
